Teachers View the Student's Video In Response to the Student Survey

Page history last edited by Robert Price 14 years, 12 months ago

The student video clips were used during the National Urban Alliance Professional Development Initiative with teachers and administrators from across the district. The video clips are students documenting points of view with interviews in response to the National Urban Alliance student survey. The professional development with teachers was on 24 March 2009 at Paul Harding High School in East Allen. The segment with the student video clips began with a Community Builder that incorporated student questions from the video clips the teachers were about to see. The community builder facilitated small group discussion with the questions prior to viewing the student's points of view (frame of reference). The second video clip below includes teacher responses and reflections after watching the student video. A third video clip below is a professional development session where the teachers develop questions in response to watching two student video clips. The list of questions by the teachers can be read on the Teachers Respond with Questions to the Students page.

Questions for Sweet Reflections from the National Urban Alliance Professional Development on the 24 March 2009.

If you could choose how to learn, what would you choose and why?

Why do some students like learning better than others?

What are some things you do in class to help students learn?

Why do you think the methods that help kids the most are used the least?

The questions generated by the students and teachers are very powerful - leading to awareness of students' needs and demonstrating teachers' concerns. This communication is necessary for the understanding of the teacher-student relationship. It is awesome to hear the questions each group would like answered in an effort to get to know the "other side" and look at education from a different point of view. I can only imagine how dynamic it will be to have this open communication, conversation, dialogue in person! I look forward to the meeting of these two groups on May 14.
